Best Modern Monday yet

This past Monday, I had a blast on Modern Monday tournament. With 23 participants, the store was full of players and different decks, so I was eager to test my luck. I opened with a hard-fought win against Melira Pod and started off the tournament perfectly. In my next match-up, I narrowly lost against URW “flash” control, but I would say it was an open game till the very end; I believe that URW Control is beatable for my Goblins, and vice versa – it seems like a fun match-up for both.

Tied at 1 – 1, my next opponent played Junk, and I more or less walked over his deck, since he never got to stabilize, which meant my fast and furious greenskin army cruised past him with ease. I learned that Goblins are a hard match-up for Junk, and their self-damaging stuff (lands & Dark Confidants) plays in my favor. At 2 – 1, another control deck awaited me, but my opponent had to go, so he dropped out of the tournament, granting me a free win. With 3 wins, I surpassed my previous records and felt great with one more round to play.

My confidence dropped once I learned my last opponent of the night will be a Splinter Twin; deck that I usually lose to, and it wasn’t any different this time. I got stomped and lost with 0 to 2, but did learn a bit about the match-up; Dismember is OK, but I didn’t have one when needed, and he had a lot of counters and burn spells to clear my board. After the event, I instantly ordered three Combusts, which will play well against URW Control as well, so I’m hoping for improving my chances about both Splinter Twin and UW-decks. Also, a tip from more experienced goblin players will come in handy – I have to play more defensively. Here is the deck I used on this Modern Monday:

Planeswalker Modern Monday, (Črna Luknja, Ljubljana, 6th of October 2014) - 6th place out of 23

Creatures (24)
Goblin Guide
Legion Loyalist
Foundry Street Denizen
Goblin Bushwhacker
Mogg War Marshal
Goblin Chieftain

Instant (6)
Lightning Bolt

Sorcery (9)
Goblin Grenade
Krenko’s Command
Dragon Fodder

Enchantment (1)
Shared Animosity
Lands (20)
19 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
Goblin King
Magma Spray
Smash to Smithereens
Shattering Spree
Stoke the Flames

All in all, it was a pleasant game day for me, finishing on the 6th place after a disastrous tourney a few weeks ago, when I ended up on the dead last place. And the 6th place was an even better accomplishment since I’m still waiting on two copies of Shared Animosity to swap out the Dynacharges – I’m eager to see how the goblins will perform with them. Also, for the next time, I’ll use two Mutavaults and sideboard two Blood Moons – but until then, all we can do is wait and hope for Animosities to arrive. Oh, and I have to get my hands on a pair of Cavern of Souls … in due time.
