KoT Standard Goblins? Really?

With the (pre)release of Khans of Tarkir, we finally got our hands on the new cards, literally. Now it’s time to check if there is a viable Goblin deck in Standard. My first guess would be not a chance! But let’s take a look at a mono-red and Mardu variety of a casual goblin tribal deck ..

Standard Mono-Red Goblin tribal

Creatures (20)
Goblin Rabblemaster
Foundry Street Denizen
Frenzied Goblin
Jeering Instigator
Goblin Kaboomist

Instant (11)
Lightning Strike
Stoke the Flames
Shrapnel Blast

Sorcery (4)
Hordeling Outburst

Artifact (4)
Obelisk of Urd
Lands (21)
21 Mountain

Standard Mardu Goblin tribal

Creatures (18)
Ankle Shanker
Foundry Street Denizen
Frenzied Goblin
Goblin Rabblemaster
Jeering Instigator

Instant (11)
Lightning Strike
Stoke the Flames
Mardu Charm
Utter End

Sorcery (4)
Hordeling Outburst

Enchantment (2)
Mardu Ascendancy

Artifact (3)
Obelisk of Urd
Lands (22)
Mountain
Swamp
Battlefield Forge
Bloodstained Mire
Caves of Koilos
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Those two are probably not the best or most efficient lists that I could have made, yet they do look fun. But most likely, both would just stumble. With cards like Mutavault and Legion Loyalist rotating out of the Standard, the loss could be too much for the Mono-Red Goblin deck to handle the format. Oh, and I didn’t make any sideboard since this is just theorycraft, and I have no clue what will the metagame look like once KoT is released. Another problem is the manabase, or the number of lands in both decks, since I’m used to playing the Modern Goblin deck with 20 lands, while those two lists seem like they need a bit more lands than just 20, and 21/22 might not be enough, specially for the Mardu variety with quite a few 3+ drops. In a timely manner, I’ll test both decks in our local gaming store, but first, I have to get my hands on Khans of Tarkir cards, and getting 4 Bloodstained Mire might take a while ..
